Memories and a request for photos of the inside of the school
Dear All at St Mary’s,
As a St. Mary’s old girl I was greatly saddened to read in the news this morning that the school is to close in September. It seems impossible that such an institution should come to an end .
I can only imagine how much worse it must be for those directly affected – the staff, the pupils, the girls who were enrolled and looking forward to start in September and who will now have to look for an alternative. They all have my greatest sympathy.
Thanks to the dedication of the Old Girls`Association team in organising a biennal OGM I was fortunate enough to be able to fly in from Austria and revisit the school a few years ago. It was a really wonderful experience and brought back many fond memories. Thank you again for that.
I have lived abroad since leaving St. Mary’s around 1974 and wanted to show my
children photos of the school I had told them so much about. They attend purpose-built schools here and could not believe that school buildings like those at St.Mary’s existed anywhere outside Hogwarts! However, as luck would have it, I left my camera at home on the day of the meeting and have been kicking myself since.
There are photos of the outside online but I wanted to show them the inside of the „old school“ – the music room with the lovely little stage (with Mr Baldwin’s piano), the dining room with its beautiful doors and great, long tables where we ate our packed lunches, the entrance hall (Grüss Gott, trittein, bring Glück herein“, as it says in the mosaic) the oak staircase up to the room where the headmistress and reverend mother (Sr. Mary Genevieve and Sr. Francis Xavier) met me on my first day……
I am wondering whther it would be at all possible for somebody to take photos of the inside and make them available to others as I am sure I am not the only one who would treasure them. Naturally, I would be more than happy to cover any costs involved.
Do you think there is any possibility at all of that?
Unfortunately, I have not been able to get a flight to make the farewell mass on Friday. It will be a very sad day but I would rather be there than be absent. I will be thinking of you all.
If you have time to reply I would be most grateful.
With best wishes
Felicity Schuster (née Money)
Faith Renger is looking for an ex teacher at St Mary's - Edith Wilensky.
Faith is the curator of Malvern Museum and is trying to trace an Austrian dance teacher who fled from Austria in 1939 and moved to Worcester in the early 1940s. The Austrian woman was EDITH WILENSKY and she and her family are the subject of a PhD research being carried out by An Austrian teacher.
One of Faith's contacts, a former pupil of St Mary's convent from 1947 to 1958, remembered Edith teaching dance at the school. She organised competitions and though strict, was a very good teacher.
